I found a series of questions that Magnum threw to their established photographers that covered “Advice to young photographers”. Their advice is inspiring as it actually comes from the top of the photographry world. People whom create through breathing photography.

The first gentleman off the rank was Abbas, whom recently released a book covering one of my favorite topics Religion. In particular “Les Enfants du lotus, voyage chez les bouddhistes” which focuses on religion.

Abbas

“My photography is a reflection, which comes to life in action and leads to meditation. Spontaneity – the suspended moment – intervenes during action, in the viewfinder.”

When did you first get excited about photography?
Upon birth

What advice would you give young photographers?
Get a good pair of walking shoes and…fall in love

More bits of gold to come!

Top Photography Podcasts

Just listen to learn

As photographers and assistants we vision new ways to keep in touch with the international photography world. Yet there are already a host of ways through on-line photography competitions, professional photographic forums, image hosting sites and Podcasts. So let us begin with Podcasts by covering what a Podcast is, how I use them and what I recommend other photographers to listening to.

For those whom are un-familiar with podcasts they are downloadable internet radio or video shows. They can be watched and listened to using iTunes on your computer or on a smart phone App. Your favourite shows can be subscribed to so that when the new episode is available you’ll know automatically. Best of all most the majority of Podcasts are user created for free public access. Currently Podcasts have allowed Chase Jarvis through to your mate around the corner in his shed to share their photographic experiences and stories with Podcasts.

Personally I listen to a select few photography Podcasts which change depending on what I need inspiration in. It seems that 99% of podcasts are created in America as the market is so much larger there. Hopefully a great podcast coming out of Europe that combines photography and art will find its way to our iTunes soon.

Photography Podcasts normally included one of the following topics:

Hardware and software how to’s and reviews.

Interviews of photographers “How I became a photographer” story.

A lecture on a specific topic in photography.

My top picks for Photography Podcasts:

This Week in Photo also known as TWIP

I quote: “Hosted by Chicago photographer Frederick Van Johnson each week they discuss camera technique, technology and news. With in-depth guest interviews, and discussion around everything from taking family photos, to understanding how state-of-the-art cameras work – you’ll hear it all on This Week in Photo.”

My say: TWIP is one of the highest rated and most updated photography Podcasts on iTunes. This dedication and quality comes through Van Johnson’s show in a humorous way. This week they covered a German Celebrity earless bunny that was crushed the photographer employed to shoot it. TWIP feels like the GAP of Photography Podcasts, it is happy to try new things in a safe and politically correct environment. Most of their show is best suited to wedding and portrait photographers.

Pro Photo Show also known as PPS

Quoted: “A photographers resource for news, information and learning. PPS is a free website dedicated to photographic sharing and learning and helping those in the pro photo world. The site is lead by Gavin Seim and the great contributors we have on board.”

My say: PPS is all about the on-line community, nurturing your personal photographic vision by taking influence from all art forms and masters. This is a true for the artists show that talks about zone systems and finding your vision. It would of be the perfect podcast for the times of film.

These two I listen to often. Let me know what exciting Podcasts your listening to in the comments below.

All the best,

Today the fabolous Miles O’Neil and I worked together on a series of portraits for his new portfolio. Mr O’Neil is most famously known as one third of the international touring Suitcase Royale (http://www.thesuitcaseroyale.com/) as well as his television commercials such as the Pure Blonde: Dove Love ad ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBWGQ-vLkII).

Watch for more of this all Australian actor being a loveable larikin (in my opinion )

Fair thee well.

Well The Last Tuesday Society are a staple of Fitzroy low through high fi theatre and musical entertainment. Again, the 30th of November, they delivered and I was lucky enough to conjured all cast, crew and audience into a massive family photo.

How does one light and direct such a task? With too many flash strobes and lots of group ‘encouraging’. A line of direction would sound like: “No! Not enough X factor. Everyone turn around and throw every once of X into those arms…”

Thank you to Janelle Low, Jessica Grenier and Carla Ori for assisting. As well as all the Last Tuesday Folk especially Richard and Bron, and those whom got up out of their chairs.

Last Wednesday the 17th brought Ryan Jaffe and his crew of 7 personable photographers to the streets of Melbourne for a pop up exhibition. The exhibition, “ITSUNDEFINDED”, focused on what all exhibitions are about, to have a great opening. Suitcases filled with Carlton Draught wrapped in Beyonce gold vinyl and topped with chilled ice showed how easy a simple idea works. ITSUNDEFINDED threw away the costs of renting a commercial showing space and focused their energy into transform a parking lot into a temporary place of conversation and debate. The change of space drew those lil people passing, stopping to watch the spectecale from the 6pm elegant hang through to the 9pm slippery pull down.

The ties of the work to the title were not so apparent. It seems as if the whole concept of just doing the exhibition without sticking to confinements of what an exhibition is presumed to be was the key. As the head collaborater Ryan Jaffe has said ” It annoys me when someone say’s: I’ve got this great idea but they never follow through.” Ryan is a case in point of just doing it. Riding from LA to Alaska on a death hog motor bike and now on a smaller scale this exhibition.

A fine showing with more to come one hopes. Bring on the installation, performance and music the ITSUNDEFINDED crew.

The Last Tuesday Society is a rare beast of the Melbourne performance arena. We have danced many evenings..well i have shot a lot of work for them. An this Friday night we decided to do their new Xmas special promotion in the city. At the steps of Flinders St no less.

Here is a snippet of what we pulled off together in the city today. Just before the rain set in. All shoot with speedlites. Thanks for the speedlite brigade Ryan Jaffe, Thomas Kingsman, Theresa Harrison and Janelle Low. All greant photographer/videographers in their own right.
